Education: Welcome
Education at the Earth Institute at Columbia University covers an array of opportunities from undergraduate and graduate options of study to fellowships, internships, research assistantships, travel grants and events. Currently there are over 28 academic programs that are affiliated with the Earth Institute, representing one of the largest collections of environmental and sustainable development education programs in the world.
In the past six years, The Earth Institute has helped to launch four new programs:
Master of Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy, housed at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) (LINK)
Master of Climate and Society, housed in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University(LINK)
PhD in Sustainable Development, offered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and housed in SIPA (LINK)
Undergraduate Concentration in Sustainable Development, housed in Columbia College(LINK)
The Guide to Education Programs (LINK) provides a complete listing of all environmental and sustainable development education programs at Columbia University. At the annual Environmental and Sustainable Development Programs Open House (LINK) hosted by The Earth Institute, students get the chance to talk with faculty and student representatives from each of these programs.
Special courses in environmental and sustainable development include the EI Practicum (LINK), a 6-lecture course at SIPA. The Earth Institute also funds environmental field trips and travel for sustainable development research (LINK), allowing faculty to incorporate fieldwork into their courses and giving students opportunities to complete their own in-depth research projects.
Additionally, the Earth Institute facilitates life-changing opportunities for students from all levels and Columbia University departments to complete student internships and research assistantships (LINK). The Earth Institute also coordinates over 40 events per year (LINK) for students and faculty, from informal brown bag lunches to workshops and panel discussions.
